RECESS - February 11 Hi, Boys and Girls-Today is February 11. It is the birthday of a very famous American. He was never president like Washington or Lincoln but he was equally important in many ways. He really changed the way we live. Today is the birthday of Thomas Alva Edison. He held more patents than any other person in America. Edison's most famous invention is probably the electric light bulb. Because he was the inventor, we see him every day and each time we flip or press a light switch. Edison did not do well in school, but he had a lab in his cellar where he was able to find out some of the answers to his many questions. Among other things he worked on a train, printed a newspaper, and learned Morse code and worked as a telegraph operator. He invented the phonograph, the radio, the movie camera, and hundreds of other things. He lived in Menlo Park, New Jersey and was known as the Wizard of Menlo Park.
A great book about his life is A Picture Book of Thomas Alva Edison by David Adler. See you tomorrow for another birthday. Mrs. L.
