RECESS October 27

Hi Boys and Girls-I have two book reviews for you today and they are both about Fall, Halloween types of stories. The first one is called "The Pumpkin Book" and it is written by Gail Gibbons. It is published by Holiday House, New York.

It is all about pumpkins and I really mean ALL about pumpkins. It tell you where they originally (oar RIJ un uh lee) came from, how to grow them and how they grow themselves, the different kinds, and all sorts of other interesting information. The book also gives you some great tips on Jack-O-Lantern making. The pictures are very colorful and helpful, especially the ones about how to plant your own pumpkins. This book really knows it’s pumpkins. I guess that is why they call it "The Pumpkin Book"!

Scroll down to see the cover and some of the text to see how hard it is.

"Sometimes pumpkin seeds are planted in rows. Other times they are planted in small circular areas called hills. Several shallow holes are poked into the hill and one pumpkin seed is dropped into each hole and covered with dirt. Each hill should be about 3 feet (1m) to 6 feet (2m) apart to give the plant lots of room to grow."

My other story is about one of my favorite characters-Corduroy! This story is called "Corduroy’s Halloween". Corduroy was created by Don Freemen, this story is by B. G. Hennessy and the pictures are by Lisa McCue. Corduroy does all of the fun Halloween things in this story. He plays in the Fall leaves, he buys what he needs for his costume, he enters a store window painting contest, and he goes Trick-Or-Treating with his friends. He even goes to a Halloween party. What fun! Scroll down to see some pictures of Halloween will be.

Today is the window-painting contest. Everyone works very hard painting ghosts, monsters, witches, cats, and bats. Corduroy paints a big, orange pumpkin. Nice job, Corduroy!"
