Petunia
The Pirate of Port Royal Sound
Hilton
Head Island, South Carolina
Yes, there
really were real pirates at Port Royal Sound! Many stories are told about Black
Beard, Captain Morgan, and others who actually sailed those waters. All around
the sea islands that surround Port Royal Sound and Hilton Head Island, pirates
slipped in and out of coves and inlets hiding from the authorities. Petunia is
not real, of course. I made her up. I imagined her. I pretended that there was a
pirate that even the other pirates could not like. I pretended that she finally
discovered how good it felt to be a friend and do kind things for others.
I live on Hilton
Head Island and as I walk around the beaches that surround Port Royal Sound, I
often imagine Petunia or the other real pirates who were said to have been here
and perhaps even buried treasure here. That image gave me the idea for Petunia.
