I Can Talk with My Hands

Written by Kristine Vreeland

Review:

I read this book to my kindergarteners a little while ago and we had such a good time with it. The story is called "I Can Talk With My Hands." It was written by Kristine Vreeland and the pictures were taken by Michael Jarrett. Notice I did not say it was illustrated by Michael Jarrett-I said he took the pictures. This book is full of great photographs.

The pictures show a young boy in lots of different places and through the story he shows you the "sign" for some of the different words used in the story. Yes, talking with your hands means using your hands to make words-it is called "sign" language.

In this story you will learn about eight (8) different signs that stand for words and you will see a picture of the boy making the sign with his hand. At the end of the story, there is a page with the sign language alphabet that I thought was very interesting. Scroll down to see the book cover, a picture of the sign language alphabet, and some words from the book.

This is my dad. My dad can talk with his hands. This is how I say "DAD." Now you try it.

My dad helps people. He is a police officer. This is how he says "police officer." Now you try it.
