Books in a SeriesLittle Golden BooksOur "BOOKS IN A SERIES" section would not be complete without the Little Golden Books. There are literally hundreds of Little Golden Books and they are all good. They range from Bugs Bunny stories to Winnie the Pooh and tons in between. Here are some examples. Bunnies New Shoes A Little Golden Book by Stephanie Calmenson Illustrated by Lisa McCue Karsten One morning Maxine Bunny wakes up and her toes have something to say, "Time for new shoes!" While Maxine’s Mommy is getting dressed for the shopping fun, Maxine watches her favorite TV show about Spunky Spaniel. Spunky Spaniel has on one red shoe and one blue shoe and HMMMMM Maxine thinks she might like that too. In the shoe store, Maxine sings the Spaniel Song.
She pick out some beautiful red shoes but she can’t have a red one and a blue one. Just then her friend Arthur Alligator comes in and he picks out a blue pair. Can they trade and each have one red and blue-No, Arthur Alligator has BIG feet. They do something else though so that they both are happy. Can you guess what it is? "Here they are," said Mr. Muskrat. "Red shoes, size six." Mr. Muskrat put one shoe on Maxine’s foot. But before he could put the other shoe on, Maxine said, "Now I need a blue one." The Tortoise and the Hare A Little Golden Book Retold by Margo Lundell Illustrated by John Nez I love this classic story and my students do too. They love the "happy" ending and while they laugh at the silly and boastful hare, they also learn a lesson from him: best not to laugh too loudly at others. Who knows what may happen in the end. A boastful hare one day visited his friend the tortoise for tea. All day the hare bragged about how clever he was. He looked at his reflection in the pond and boasted about how handsome he was. And finally he claimed that he was the fastest runner in the whole world. On the following day, the hare told the tortoise that he had run away from the farmer that very morning. "I am surely the fastest runner there is," he bragged. At last, the tortoise had heard enough boasting. "I know you can run very fast," she said. "But I could beat you in a race." The tortoise, not a very quick fellow on the best of days, started to become angry. Finally he had enough of all the hare’s pompous (POM puss-pompous means overly proud.) words and told the hare he would best him in a race. Well, of course the hair laughed and laughed. When the tortoise insisted, he finally agreed, sure to win. Of course, you know the hare doesn’t. Read this retelling and see why. Some Ducks Have All The Luck Walt Disney’s Donald Duck A Little Golden Book Donald is in trouble. He can’t think of a gift to give Daisy for her Birthday. And to make matters worse, he thinks Gladstone Gander, his rival for Daisy’s affection (That means the other guy who wants to be Daisy’s boyfriend.) is going to get something really spectacular (spek TAK u lur) for her. He asks his nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie, what to do but they are no help at all. Just then, he looks up and sees Gladstone Gander walking by. He decides to follow him to see what he is getting for Daisy. Gladstone spots Donald, and to tease him he goes to all the expensive (That means the stores that cost lots of money$$$.) stores. Gladstone really has no money but he does win something that he decides to use for his present. It is a great gift, but Donald comes up with a better one and it’s FREE! I wonder what it is. Donald caught up with Gladstone Gander outside the Sniff of Success Perfume Shop. Gladstone couldn’t resist teasing Donald. "Fancy meeting you here, Donald. I was just trying to decide what to give Daisy for her birthday- a diamond bracelet, a 100carat Chocolate Bonbon, or a bottle of Liquid Gold, the Perfume Too Expensive to Wear," said Gladstone gleefully. Bugs Bunny’s Carrot Machine A Little Golden Book Written by Clark Carlisle Illustrated by Anthony Strobl and Bob Totten Bugs Bunny dashes out on the secondhand bookstore (That is a place where used books are sold.) and bumps into Elmer Fudd. He tells Elmer that he found a magazine with the plans for a carrot making machine! Off they go to the City Dump to look for parts. They work and work following the plans in the old magazine and would you believe it, sure enough they create a machine that makes carrots-the trouble is, they are GREEN! They are the wrong shape too. They have no texture. They find an old jar of orange marmalade to make them orange and try to fix the other problems and finally they do make a carrot-a little tiny one. Bugs looked around and found a moth-eaten pillow. "Here’s something pretty soft," he said. He stuffed the pillow down the funnel and pushed the button. Another small, square, green carrot came out of the spout. Bugs tasted it. Read the book to see the surprise ending and find out how Bugs finally gets some carrots. |
