The Reading Room TV Show
How the Show is
made
Many
episodes of the The Reading Room were filmed made in a Community Access TV
station in California. Join us as we produce the show and see what is involved to make
a show. The folks at the station have
been wonderful, teaching us what to do. Do you have a Community Access TV Station near
you. Find out about it. It is great fun.
Here is what
happens in our normal shoot.
We tried to get two shows in a 4 hour session
at the studio.
The studio
was
"bare" when we arrive, and looks cold.
It really needs some color and lighting

Let's set up the Reading Room

Ed gets the lights

Now we test the lighting to see if it is
right for

Lighting is OK, let's test the cameras

We also have many microphones, and other
sources of sound, such as the CD Player with The Reading Room song on it.
Sound coming from different places has to be
set so that you hear them at the same volume. Here is where the sound technician
"mixes" the sound
Each microphone and tape has its own
control, and must be balanced.

These are the recording tape decks that
make the video tapes of the show.

Tape decks are managed through a controller.

And this is where we "mix" the
video and "take a camera". This video board allows a director to decide which
camera's picture will be recorded to tape.
Yes, that is a joystick at the back, and it
allow you to create special effects. The two levers allow you to "fade" between
cameras. A "fade" is when one picture fades, or blends into another.

Camera, Lights , Action

Go Tessa, get the best shots. Look at the
wall. There are many TV screens that show Tessa see the pictures from each of the three
cameras, and from the tape deck. She directs (chooses) what is recorded to tape.
"Take Camera One, Take Camera Three,
Roll the Credits", she says as she records from different cameras through the video
board.
Tessa is ever so busy during the taping of a
show.

The show is done, it's time to
"break" the set.

Well that another show, and the studio is
quiet once again.

Thanks to our wonderful crew
who got the whole show started at KSAR, Saratoga, California.
